Executive Q&A Feature Story – Nov. 8
Congratulations to the Vista team!
Today Microsoft announced that Office 2007 has “gone “gold” and was released to manufacturing. This is a great milestone in what I think is a great product. Read the full press release here.
Why am I excited about Office 2007? Here is the short list:
- Cleaner, easier to use, easier to navigate “ribbon” UI that is also extensible.
- Open XML document formats. The new open format that enable all kinds enterprise solutions. The new format files are smaller too!
- SharePoint steps up to the plate and becomes clearly best in class supported by the other tools of the Office System
- Smart Art in PowerPoint - this is just a great new feature.
- Improved, integrated search throughout the product
- RSS integration into Microsoft Outlook
Congratulations to the Office team on their accomplishment. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the final bits.

I’ve sold out and joined the Google Economy, you will notice a banner of Google Powered ads across the top of the site as well as a Google Search button. I added it more as an experiment to see how it was done rather than as some great money making scheme. Although, it would be nice to pay for the hosting costs

Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack
Published by October 18th, 2006 in Windows Vista, Windows and Microsoft. 0 CommentsAnnounced today on the Windows Vista Team Blog Microsoft will make available the Desktop Optimization Pack that brings together many of the technologies that Microsoft has acquired recently through companies like Softricity, DesktopStandard and others. This will be available to Software Assurance Customers using Vista Enterprise Edition. Here are some of the details:
Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack for Software Assurance includes:
· Microsoft SoftGrid, an application virtualization and streaming solution that can deliver applications to users in seconds, without being locally installed, on any PC they login to. Virtualization also resolves many application compatibility conflicts because each application can run with the version of a supporting file that it needs.
· Microsoft Asset Inventory Services, which analyzes all programs on employee PCs, reducing the labor and guesswork that often stymies attempts to inventory the applications on the PCs within an organization and turns that into intelligent reports and analysis.
· Microsoft Advanced Group Policy Management, which provides versioning, history, and rollback of Group Policy settings, along with delegation and role based administration.
· Microsoft Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset, designed to help IT departments quickly pinpoint the causes of PC troubles, recover lost data, and reduce future downtime with post-crash analysis.

I’m looking forward to digging into these documents and tools. This looks like a MAJOR step forward in running Windows in enterprise environments.
New iPod feature for Windows: iVirus
Published by October 18th, 2006 in Windows and iPod & iTunes. 0 CommentsJust heard that Apple shipped thousands of video iPods with a Windows virus onboard:
Small Number of Video iPods Shipped With Windows Virus
We recently discovered that a small number - less than 1% - of the Video iPods available for purchase after September 12, 2006, left our contract manufacturer carrying the Windows RavMonE.exe virus. This known virus affects only Windows computers, and up to date anti-virus software which is included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it. So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free. As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.
-Apple Computer October 17, 2006
Wow….I don’t know what to say about this one, Apple screws up majorly, spreads a virus to it’s customers, and uses the opportunity to stand on their soapbox and declare Windows insecure again, as if viruses somehow don’t occur on Mac OS X. Apple, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
If you’re buying a video iPod, make sure you update your virus definitions and scan the device when you plug in in.
